Please keep in mind the clothing you plan to wear with the trammelink you select so it will "fit" the clothing correctly.
If the button is too small or too large, it may not fit into the buttonhole properly.
If a trammelink is designed for men's clothing, it will be "backwards" for women's clothing, just as one designed for women's clothing will be backwards for men's clothing. Some trammelinks are considered “unisex” styles and can work for both types.
We are happy to work with you to ensure that your trammelink has the correct button size and side.
We can switch button sides and sizes on trammelinks as needed. If the item you like has a button size that is too large or small, or if you need it on the other side, please note that in the Special Instructions section under the Shipping area when ordering. Or you can email us at trammelinks@gmail.com before ordering to let us know what would work best for you.
There are various theories as to why there is a difference (buttons on the right or left side) for men's and women's clothing. The important thing – from the Trammelink ® point of view – is to be aware of whether you need a trammelink for men’s or women’s clothes. We specify for each trammelink if it’s designed for men’s clothing or women’s clothing, so the button will be on the correct side for the clothing you have in mind.
For easy button size reference, a dime is 17.5mm (11/16 inch), a penny is 19mm (3/4 inch), a nickel is 22mm (7/8 inch), and a quarter is 25.5mm (1 inch). So if your button is the size of one of those coins, it will be easy to know the size.
However, shirt buttons are almost all smaller than a dime, so you may want to have a ruler handy! Button measurements are based on the diameter of the button.
Women’s button sizes can vary greatly, based on the overall design of the shirt or jacket. In general, women’s shirt buttons are between 10mm and 16mm. Suitcoat (and sweater) buttons are often between 16mm and 24mm. In reality, you can see buttons ranging from 6mm up to 41mm in the women’s fashion world!
Buttons on men's clothing tend to be more standard. Generally, men’s shirt buttons are 9.5mm, 11mm, or 13mm. Men’s suitcoat (jacket) buttons are 20.5mm, although the jacket cuff buttons are smaller (16mm).
